Sorry if this is a duplicate post/question - I did search extensively and read a few FAQs but it's a pretty weird set up so I guess it's not asked often.
I'm building and migrating into my first unRAID box and contemplating parity. I do have my single largest drive earmarked for parity right now, but as I'm storing entirely disposable Chia plots, I'm wondering if it would be better as simply a data drive.
I can see unRAID works by scattering files across drives and then just presenting them all as one. My question is, what happens if I lose one drive?
Will everything still work, just without those files? Can I carry on like that?
Or will the whole thing grind to a halt and take ALL my data with it?
This array will hold literally nothing but completely disposable Chia plots. If I dedicate a 16TB to parity - I lose out on 16TB of space. If I accept the risk of no parity, I gain 16TB right from the get-go, and then later, if I lose, say, a 6TB drive ... big whoop, I'm down 6TB - pull it, recycle it, and maybe throw another drive in later and do some replotting. Better than losing out on 16TB that entire time just to potentially avoid losing 14TB or 8TB or whatever at some point down the line.
If it will take the whole array offline though, then I'll have no choice but to include parity.

2022.01.19 23:39 Zee-Dee-Zachary Despite most of our thoughts that trading Zeke for decent value is impossible, there’s an underrated way.

Now I’m sure most of you have heard of a pick swap at some point in your life.
If you haven’t, a pick swap is usually an exchange of picks in the same round that has the higher pick going to the team giving up a player in the trade if only one team is giving a player up.
The primary team I’m looking at here is Miami. They’ve been the center of a couple RB rumors the last couple years, even some with Zeke last offseason but more on the low end of rumors as they were in Aaron Jones discussions. Them being in discussions for a new quarterback this offseason could also offset a RB rumor for them
The primary trade I’m thinking of would be…
Dallas receives: Pick 50 and Pick 117
Miami receives: RB Ezekiel Elliott, Pick 56 and Pick 125
Instead of just 1 pick swap, there’s two in here because even though Zeke may not be an insane amount anymore, I didn’t feel like a 6 pick movement up even in round 2 would be worth it so I threw in a round 4 pick swap to go with it.
Miami really does not lose anything in this trade other than cap space which they’re pretty solid at one of the highest numbers in the league. And they get a RB who could end up helping them if he doesn’t play through a torn PCL for three months again
Dallas on the other hand may seem like they’re losing this trade but I beg to differ. With a team that may need to trade up in round 1 to get what they’re looking for, moving up 6 picks in round 2 and 8 picks in round 4 could really push a trade over the top if it comes to it. And with a decently deep draft at positions like WR, O-Line and yup, RB, better picks even in the same round could really turn into a huge difference in who we’re drafting.
Personally, if I were the GM, I’d wait to trade him. But seeing as this would be the popular preference if it becomes a real possibility, I’d like to see what you think of it.

There are twins, Leia and Lauren, who are just starting kindergarten, and little brother Luke who is just starting preschool. The family lives in Singapore. The parents clearly work hard to give them good education, which is always good to see. Yes, they do lots of ads with the kids. Yes, I wonder what they will think of their highly publicized childhoods when they get older. And I obviously don’t see their real lives. But the kids look genuinely cheerful with truly close sibling bonds. The vibes are very different from the other families discussed on this forum.
Is there such a thing as a good parent who chooses to be a parenting influencer? If so, can y’all give an example?

2022.01.19 23:39 The_Calm What is your take on Character Progression?

I am finding myself getting bogged down in trying to 'solve' character progression for my game. I hear a lot about other people's stats, skill, conflict resolution, inventory, combat, and magic systems. I don't hear often about how other people handle Character Progression in their games. I am curious if my specific concerns are legitimate, and also how other people handle it.
Even if you don't read my own attempts at this, I would appreciate hearing from you on how you manage progression.
My concerns: I don't like levels. I understand the appeal of levels, but I think it feels weird to have your character become noticeably stronger, mid-campaign of even mid-session, once a specific XP threshold is reached. I don't judge games that have levels, but if I'm designing a game to fit my tastes, then I'd like something that feels at least a little bit more natural.
In the past I would have players spend XP to improve skills, purchase spells, or purchase traits. The benefits is that this allowed for constant minor progression, which a lot of players liked, and was a form of customizable progression, which is important to me. However, it still lacked the narrative connection unless it happened between sessions, and the sheer number of options and lack of direction, especially for newer players meant that it took a lot of mental effort to pick from all the possible options.
My biggest challenge right now, for this current system, it trying to incorporate progression mechanics into gameplay. That way the progression flows intuitively, if you assume the character is special, and is capable of otherwise rapid progression over the course of in-game 'weeks' or 'months'.
My possible Solutions:
Archetype Menu & In-Game Triggers: A player chooses Archetypes, they can have multiple. Each Archetype has a menu of progression options they can purchase with XP. However, instead of immediately getting the new progression, they have to complete some relevant task in game to receive it as a reward.
So if the player comes across a book, they can spend XP to purchase some knowledge, and that book will give them access to that knowledge once they read it. They make 'Reading' checks during their down-time against the difficulty of the book until they complete it. Characters with higher relevant skill can read more difficult books or read faster. There also might be a trainer in town of their specific Archetype, and they can pay XP to be able to learn something specific from the trainer, assuming they can afford the monetary cost or gain enough favor for the lesson. There also might be magical or divine revelations during dreams or meditation.
Other triggers could include events. Some progression options can be purchased if gravely wounded or if you fail a check bad enough. This allows narrative progression and limiting the options to an archetype so they player isn't as overwhelmed by choices. However, this is highly dependent on the GM to allow opportunities for the player to capitalize on. It also requires some player planning, otherwise they may not realize an even was a potential opportunity for progression unless they memorized all the progression options.
Personal Quests: This option has the player pick quests that fit the narrative of their character or archetype. The quest can be selected from a list of suggested quests or customized between the player and GM. Depending on the difficulty of the quest, this can give the player moderate to strong progression. An example would be 'Seek out the Witch in the forest to learn some witchcraft' or 'make 10 difficult shots to improve your ranged attack skill' or 'spend X hours studying undead to learn some basic necromancy'. The player will be able to have multiple quests at a time. Maybe they can purchase quests with XP or they can have a certain number of quests maximum at any one time.
This allows the player to have more control over their progression rate and rewards, but suffers from risk of overwhelming them with too many options. I could use the Archetype menu idea here as well, to limit the choices. However, some quests may still take a lot longer to accomplish if poorly chosen or if the GM isn't accommodating.
How do you personally design Character Progression? Do you use XP, Levels, in-game narrative connections, or in between sessions or scenes?
